Mong Kok finds

Yet another must-try food item in Hong Kong is the roast goose. Yung Kee at Central is undoubtedly one of the most famous places to savour this popular dish, but a friend recently introduced me to Sham Tseng Chan Kee on Reclamation Street, just behind Langham Place Mall in Mong Kok. Having already paid my touristy dues at Yung Kee a few times, Chan Kee will probably be the place to go to from now on. It's not bad tasting, and a lot easier on the wallet.

Roast goose drumstick - quite good.

Roast goose and char siew (barbecued pork) rice with iced milk tea.

I love venturing down the streets in Mong Kok - there's always lots to see, buy and eat. But it's also really crowded most of the time.

Street eats are aplenty. I'm not a major fan except for the curry fishballs, which I simply love. The texture of the fishballs is different from what we are used to in Singapore - less springy somehow. Hong Kongers also seem to love their 鸡蛋仔 (literally translated as mini eggs, but also known as eggettes or egg waffles). However, I find these to be just flour and not very special.

Something that I always look out for is the mobile softee van parked at random streets. The soft-serve ice-cream (软雪糕, yuen suuet gou) costs HK$9 and is really creamy and yummy.

Food aside, there is the Ladies' Market on Tung Choi Street which is almost synonymous with the mention of Hong Kong. First-time visitors should check it out for the experience, but personally, the kind of goods sold at such street markets - toys, souvenirs, clothes, imitation designer bags, bedsheets even - do not appeal. Moreover, items tend to be way overpriced as they are targetted at unsuspecting tourists. Be sure to bargain hard should anything ever catch your eye. Also beware of pickpockets and keep your bags close to and in front of you.

Lastly, for fans of Macau's famous Koi Kei Bakery, you can also buy your cookies in Hong Kong. The Mong Kok branch is along Argyle Street, near the intersection with Fa Yuen Street (Sportswear Street).
